I’ve wanted to go kayaking for a long time. We live on an island on the Gulf Coast of Florida, and we always see people enjoying the water in their kayaks or on their boats. I grew up boating with my family, spending a lot of our summer Saturdays fishing, swimming and baking in the sun.
As an adult, though, I hardly ever find myself out on the water. We actually have a really nice stretch of water as our backyard, and I’m ashamed to say we never use it.
There always seems to be an excuse for not doing things. We’re too busy, too tired, have too many other things to do… But I’m starting to think of things in a different way. And I’m trying to look at life in a different way. Less stress, more fun! I have two young children, and I want their childhood to be as full of happiness and fun adventures as mine was.
To be completely honest, it’s too easy to make the excuse that I’m a single mom. “If I only had someone to do these things with,” I’ll think.
But I don’t (for now, at least…), and my kiddos and I deserve to have our own fun family memories!
And look… the kayak fits the three of us just PERFECTLY!
We’ve had it for a week now, and I’ve taken the kids out three times already. They’re really enjoying it, and so am I! We got a paddle for me and a break-apart paddle for them. That way they can take turns with it as one long paddle or split it into two, and they can each help row, row, row our bright green boat (named Lemon Lime by Jillian) gently down the canal.
The best part so far is paddling over the shallow seagrass area across our canal, where it’s clear enough to see right through. We’ve seen stingrays and lots of tiny fish. And the coolest part of our marine life is our jumping mullet, leaping out of the water all around us as we paddle through (one nearly leapt right in our kayak!).
I can’t tell you how excited I am that the weather down here in FL is starting to change… FINALLY! This weekend, we’re supposed to have highs in the low 80s! The low 80s! I’m so tired of sweating. Sounds like perfect kayaking weather to me!
