We could not have gotten these at a better time. Seriously! I have been wracking my brain for protein-based snacks for Jillian lately, and then we get a box of these little beauties on the doorstep. Perfection!
Jillian started back with gymnastics this past fall, something she’s been begging to do for years. Literally, years now. I put her in gymnastics for the first time when she had just turned 3. It was right after the 2008 summer Olympics. She and I had obsessively watched Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liuken tumble and flip their way to gold, while Jillian herself practiced tiny handstands and forward rolls on the carpet in front of the TV.
They had a rush of new memberships at the gym that August, no doubt due to the popularity of the Olympics that summer. And we followed right along and signed up. She quickly moved from the Mommy and Me class to the little tumblers and kept right on going for 2 full years… until she started Kindergarten and I got so overwhelmed with her new school schedule, my then 1-year-old son, and the fact that the gym now wanted her to come twice a week for double the price. We were already driving 45 minutes one-way to get her there once a week, and with everything else going on, I just couldn’t do it anymore. We tried to keep going just once a week, but the other girls that were hitting the gym twice a week were starting to really excel and leave her in the dust. So we took a break.
A 6-year break to be exact. With her begging to join up again every other month or so. But it was so far, and so much money. As a single mom with two little ones, I just couldn’t make it happen. We tried some small, local tumbling and dance classes, but that desire for true gymnastics was always there.
Fast forward to fall of ’16. I’m married, we’ve moved closer to the gym, and I’ve made the commitment to homeschool Jillian for 6th grade. We live closer, we have more income and most importantly, she needs a social circle of friends to balance out the fact that she’s going to be stuck at home with her mom and her newborn baby brother for an entire year. So on her second happiest day of the year (the first being the day baby Spencer was born!), she rejoined gymnastics at the same gym, and she’s been ecstatically flipping about ever since!
But here’s a problem we didn’t have back when she was little. These classes really take it out of her! She’s doing much more challenging things with her body, and she’s doing them more often than she was at age 3. She was really getting seriously wiped out after an hour long class.
Her coach suggested one thing: protein. It will help build muscle and it will help her keep her strength up during class. We talked about how difficult it is to find protein for someone who is allergic to milk, eggs and nuts. Meat is OK, she said, but it’s a slower digesting protein, and what Jillian needed was something she could eat about an hour before class, that would give her a quick boost of power and energy, and not leave her feeling drained.
In come Enjoy Life Foods ProBurst Bites!
They are the absolute perfect quick-grab snack as we head out the door for gymnastics.
Each serving of 3 bites has 6 or 7 grams of protein (depending on which flavor you choose). I’ll be honest, Jillian didn’t get these all to herself. I feel a little guilty about it, but my husband and I found ourselves grabbing two or three out of a bag each time we felt we needed a quick pick-me-up.
They’re a guilt-free snack! They’re healthy and yummy, and they’re filling to boot! Not many snacks tick off all those boxes. They come in four flavors (all with a chocolate base): Cinnamon Spice, Mango Habanero, Cranberry Orange and Sunseed Butter.
I totally surprised myself with my pick of a favorite. I do not like spicy things. Not at ALL. Keep the spice to yourself, people, I don’t like it. But guess what? My favorite flavor, out of all four, was Mango Habanero. What do ya know? I don’t even like mangos. Seriously! But the deliciously fruity smell when you open the bag is completely intoxicating, and I found myself going back to that baggy over… and over… and over again.
I was curious what they were made of, and I couldn’t tell from eating them. I could taste the sunseed butter in that flavor, and figured (rightly so) that that’s where the protein comes from in that one. But what about the others? What is the base that gives it protein, but doesn’t have a distinct flavor on it’s own?
Pumpkin seeds! Ha! I never would have guessed. Not a big fan of pumpkin myself, I was pleased that these guys don’t taste of pumpkin. Not a single bit. Clever, Enjoy Life people. Very clever, indeed.
I have to apologize for my pictures here. I literally couldn’t get pictures of these taken until they were almost gone! My husband one day said, “You’d better hurry and take a picture… there’s about one bite left in each bag.” Oops!!! We ate them so fast I barely got any pictures of them!
