What’s new with Island Picnic? A brand spankin’ new website, for starters! Oh. My. Gosh! I love it! 🙂
Every few years, we update our website — the look, the feel, sometimes even the hosting and entire backend, too. This time it was a complete overhaul. I used to blog on WordPress, but I had a completely different shopping cart site for Island Picnic. I wasn’t happy with that for very long. It was complicated to manage two sites and try to link them together. I also wasn’t happy at all with how non-user-friendly my old shopping cart site was.
A few months ago, I hooked up with a fantastic web designer here on Anna Maria Island (who also happens to be a friend), and I told her my woes. She easily steered me in the right direction and suggested I use WordPress for both blogging and ecommerce. Oh, how thankful I am that I listened to her!
It’s sooooooooooo much easier now to handle my shop from the backend. The admin side of things was killing me before! Nothing was easily laid out– I had to hunt and hunt for what I wanted to change, and half the time, I had to write new code to make it happen… which doesn’t come naturally to me. Granted, being forced to write code in the buried-deep folders of my FTP files did teach me a thing or two, but it was not something I cared to continue doing for the foreseeable future.
I ain’t got time for that!
Nope, just give it to me plain and simple. Want to change the font? Click the font button. Holy crap, is it really that simple?! Heck yeah! And it should be.
And so it is now.
Because of this new awesomeness and ease of admin-related editing, my time has been freed up for other, more important things, like making my allergy-friendly recipes and blogging about them, working on new photography for our organic picnic blankets, or coming up with new designs and products (which is probably my favorite thing to do!).
That’s what I’m getting out of my new site.
But what can you, my fantastic reader/shopper expect from this new website?
An ease of navigation. Everything is laid out in a way that totally makes sense. Want to shop? Click the Shop button. In the mood to read? Head on over to my Blog. And while you’re there, you can easily find your way around in my different blog categories, like Recipes, Food Allergy Tips & Advice or Around Anna Maria Island, in the sidebar or from the dropdown menu at the top.
See, this is what I’m talking about — an ease of navigation! This is what was totally missing from my old site. And quite honestly, there are a number of other blogs out there lacking in the navigation department, too. The best thing when I go to a blog for a little light reading is being able to easily find what I’m looking for. What are they about? What do they have to offer me? What else might I like to read there? If I have to search too hard for it, it’s over. I sincerely hope you, my readers, find this new design effortlessly easy to read through. And I hope you have fun poking around all that I’ve worked so hard on so far.
Now that this huge hurdle of building our new site and switching over is done, I can get back to what I enjoy the most: sharing all that I have learned about handling severe food allergies — including the many, many recipes I’ve stumbled across or created myself, plus some kid’s activities, DIY projects, green living tips, and of course, anything new going on with Island Picnic — like new products, new fabrics and our latest promotions.
Thank YOU for reading it all! 🙂
